Eczema is a chronic condition that results in inflammation of the skin. This common condition that affects more than 30 million Americans, can produce a variety of symptoms in children including itching, flaking, scaling, weeping, and crusting. The most common type is atopic dermatitis which often goes hand-in-hand with other allergic conditions such as hay fever and asthma. There are also many other causes and triggers. Typically, eczema symptoms are treated to relieve pain and itching. However, an increasing number of medical experts are recommending kids multi vitamins as a way to treat eczema from the inside out.
The FDA has approved two drugs known as topical immunomodulators (TIMs) for treating mild to moderate eczema. However, doctors have been warned to prescribe the drugs with caution as there are possible cancer risks associated with their use. This has further warranted many to leverage the benefits of kids multi vitamins to take a more natural approach to treating eczema.
Supplements that contain vitamin B3 (niacin) and B6 can be particularly beneficial as they are both necessary for skin health. Vitamin C and vitamin D can also help by inhibiting inflammation of the skin which often leads to itching and dryness. Zinc may also be helpful by enhancing the immune system and natural healing.
If you are concerned about your child’s eczema, it’s a good idea to discuss all treatment options with your pediatrician. Many times a treatment plan will include medication, avoidance of harsh soaps and detergents, and the addition of kids multi vitamins. With the right plan in place, symptoms often quickly lessen and sometimes disappear altogether.
