Taking on Flu Season 2014-15 with Kids Multivitamins

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the current flu season is expected to be one of the worst in years. An unforeseen mutation in this year’s dominant flu strain will mean that even those who have been vaccinated are more likely to contract the virus. With a greater risk now present, many health experts are recommending that children be given kids multivitamins to help support healthy immunity.

This year, more than half of the reported cases of flu have been a version of H3N2 virus. With this strain, there typically is a higher rate of hospitalizations. Health officials are still recommending that children be vaccinated despite the mutation because it will offer some amount of protection. However, additional precautions should be taken because of the increased risk of contracting the virus.

For children, immune-boosting kids multivitamins with recommended dietary allowances of vitamin D3, K2 and other vitamins and minerals can be beneficial. This is especially true for children who do not have a balanced diet or who have certain health conditions that require additional nutritional supplementation.

Besides kids’ multivitamins, there are other preventative measure that can be taken to minimize the chances of contracting and passing on flu this year:

  • Teach children to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when they cough or sneeze
  • Promote regular hand washing with soap and water.
  • Provide an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Remind children to not touch their eyes, nose, or mouth which are common paths for germs to spread.
  • Don’t send children to school when they are sick.
  • Get children vaccinated.

The two types of flu vaccine (flu shot and nasal spray) can offer some protection this year, so vaccination remains a good idea. As well, taking proactive measures to avoid the virus while boosting immunity with kids multivitamins is the most effective way to prevent the flu from becoming a major illness in your family this year.
